Chapter 9 is going to be a bit late, so here are a few deleted scenes...I liked both of them and they made up the bulk of Chapter 5.  Anyway, both of these take place after the proverbial poo hits the fan, when Braxiatel and Donna shut down the Citadel over office supplies.  Both of them slowed the plot down considerably.

this first scene is between Maggie and Ada.  There isn't much 'grown up' interaction between the two of them, and I think I'd like to revisit their friendship in later fics.  No matter how strong a friendship, it can't be unaffected by the difference in power between the two.  (It also means I have to post the fic that introduces their friendship.)

Deleted scene #1 )

This next scene was in the TARDIS Graveyard that was mentioned in passing by Ada the next morning after she comes and tells them that it isn't safe for either to be on Gallifrey.  Now, in early drafts of "Spiegel," Margaret was pregnant.  That story arc got cut out early, since it didn't mesh with anything else and was too dependent upon continuity from "Mykonos." I think Vardan, being a sensitive, modern alien, would experience couvade, but it came out as too comedic for this fic.  The brevity of it didn't do justice to the awe, terror, wonder, and fear that new parents experience, and I didn't want to fall into the trap of so much baby!fic.

I liked the scene in the Graveyard, and I thought it summed up post-war Gallifrey.  But I think the final version of chapter 5 flows better in the context of everything that happens after.

Deleted scene #2 )

Which New Who character does this remind you of?

It's from the short story, "Midrash" by Ian Mond in Life During Wartime, a collection of short stories in the Bernice Summerfield end of things.  Setting:  it's during the invasion of the Fifth Axis, a human supremacist group of thugs, who wind up taking over the sector that the Braxiatel Collection is in, catching everyone (and Braxiatel) unaware, since the asteroid Brax picked was supposed to be in a boring corner of the galaxy, where nothing ever happens.  Anyway, all aliens (except Brax) have either been shipped into camps or shipped elsewhere.  Brax is under house arrest for the duration of it and subject to various interrogations as to where his "time equipment" is.  This passage happens after Braxiatel tries to poison one of the Fifth Axis commanders, and they bring in a special interrogator.  When this passage happens, he's in some sort of trance.

"I pity you, Irving.  I pity you because I know you wanted to be so much more.  When you were young, you desired freedom.  You wanted to break the shackles of your people and enjoy the wonders of the universe.  You'd no longer be methodical, precise and practical.  Out there, you'd be transformed into a totally different person, both physically and mentally.  You'd actually find yourself a personality.

"But it never happened.  Your opportunity never came.  Or maybe it did and you were too frightened to sieze it.  Others had those adventures for you.

"And so here you are, hiding behind all this beauty:  artefacts and documents and treasures.  You think this is a replacement for a dream you never realised.  But deep down you know it's nothing compared to leaving your own mark on the universe.

"To become legend.

"Because in your own arrogant way, that's what you really wanted to be.  A legend.  A camp-fire story."

The Doctor sniffed at the piece of chocolate in his hand.  Through the foil, it didn't smell like anything in particular, other than aluminum.  Without ceremony, he unwrapped it, popped it in his mouth, and chewed.  Analyzing its chemical content by taste, he could identify theobromine, caffeine, phenylethylamine, anandamide, various sugars, fats, and vitamins.  He swallowed the softened lump of chocolate with a bit of disappointment.  Most humans made chocolate into some sort of epiphanic experience.

At first he wondered if it was because his brain blocked the reception of phenylethylamine and anandamide.  Turning on those receptors, he didn't feel any differently.  Resigned, he turned his attention to other things.

"Not like that!"  Susan, his granddaughter, said after sensing his disappointment.  "Here, like this.  Let it melt first."  She took another piece, more as an excuse for seconds.  She squinted her eyes closed in appreciation and bliss.  "You try!"

Incredulous, the Doctor took the piece offered.  This time, he let it rest in his mouth.  With a bit of impatience, he increased the blood flow to the tissues in his mouth so that the sweet would melt.  As the cocoa butters melted, a warmth spread wherever the melting chocolate touched.  The warmth grew, until the flavors exploded in his mouth in a swirl of creamy sweetness, and loamy cocoa.

The flavors lingered, even after the chocolate was gone.  "I believe that more experimentation is necessary," he said as he reached for another piece.

Little explanation...this is from pp. 166-167 of Tears of the Oracle by Justin Richards, one of the Benny NA's after they lost the Doctor Who license.  There's a lot they can't mention (the Doctor, Time Lords, etc), so things get referred to obliquely.  It's pretty obvious who Braxiatel is talking about, and in Empire of Glass, the Doctor makes a few hints that they knew each other quite well in childhood.  Come to think of it, Empire of Glass and Theatre of War (the novel with the Seventh Doctor and Benny where Braxiatel is introduced), are pretty much unresolved sibling rivalry among near-godlike aliens.  Their poor, sainted parents, as Mike would say.

In terms of timeline, this happens after "Gallifrey: Pandora," when Braxiatel took the Pandora fragment into his mind and partitioned it off.  That happened mere hours after he became Chancellor, and almost immediately after that happened, it came to light that he had been in contact with past and future selves for personal gain (to build the Collection), and he was stripped of his title and exiled.  (Was actually kind of a political screw job from Narvin and Darkel.)  Tears of the Oracle describes how Braxiatel won the planetoid the Collection was housed on and the first expedition to it.

By the way, the editor to Tears of the Oracle was the same person as the script editor for "Smith and Jones," where the Doctor's brother was also mentioned.
